Still on FC 26? When last year’s game is the smarter choice

FC 26 or FC 27: when last year's game is the smarter choice

EA SPORTS FC 27 has been out for a month, its first balance patch is lined up for November and Ultimate Team is already into Season 2. Plenty of people are still playing FC 26 all the same, and for a good share of them that is not stubbornness. It is the sensible choice.

Whether it is the sensible choice for you comes down to one question: how much of your time goes into Ultimate Team.

What you give up by staying

Ultimate Team ages faster than anything else in the game. Every autumn the club starts again from zero in the new edition, and EA’s content calendar moves with it: promos, Evolutions, Season Passes and the weekly Rivals and Champions rewards all land in FC 27. FUT 26 does not switch off, but its transfer market thins out, prices drift, and the opponents left in Division Rivals are mostly the ones who never stopped playing.

The same goes for anything that depends on the current squads and the current meta. If you want the newest ratings, the cards everyone is talking about and a ranked ladder full of people, FC 27 is the game, and there is no way around that.

What still works perfectly well

Nearly everything else. Manager Career and Player Career are offline modes, and they do not care what year it is. The database is a season old, but the depth is identical: transfers, contracts, youth scouting, the slow build of a club over ten seasons. Kick-Off against a friend on the sofa plays exactly as it did on launch day, and Rush, the 5v5 mode, still finds matches.

FC 26 also happens to suit this kind of player. It was the edition that split gameplay into two presets: Competitive, tuned for online play, and Authentic, which slows the game down and leans on realism for offline modes. If most of your hours go into a career save, FC 26 on Authentic is a very good football game, and it will stay one.

If Ultimate Team is not your main mode, the new edition changes less than the price suggests.

The money side

A new FC costs full price for its first months. A year-old one costs a fraction of that, in store sales and on the second-hand market, which is where a lot of FC 26 players are coming from right now.

That market mostly means game accounts that already own FC 26. At the time of writing, the EA SPORTS FC 26 accounts section on Goranked lists just over 400 offers: 314 for PC, 76 for PlayStation and 15 for Xbox. Standard Edition accounts for PC start at around €10, Ultimate Edition ones mostly sit between €25 and €50, and accounts with a built-up Ultimate Team club and coins on the balance go well past €100.

Buying an FC 26 account without regrets

Check the platform first. On PC, FC 26 is sold through Steam, the EA app and the Epic Games Store, but every version runs through an EA account, so you are really getting two logins: the store and EA. On PlayStation it is the PSN account, on Xbox the Microsoft account. Make sure the listing says which one changes hands.

Then read how it is handed over. Listings usually offer one of three things: full access with the original email, a full data change, or a new account registered with the game already on it. The last two are safer, because nobody else keeps the recovery email.

Know what the price covers. A fresh account comes with a fresh Ultimate Team club. When a title says “Rating 1, 1k coins”, it means exactly that. You are paying for access to the game, not for a squad, unless the listing says otherwise.

Use a marketplace that holds the money. On Goranked the payment stays in escrow until you have signed in and confirmed that the game is in the library and launches. Listings are moderated and support answers around the clock. Once you are in, change the password and the email straight away and turn on two-step verification for both the EA account and the store account.

One honest caveat. EA’s user agreement treats accounts as personal and not for resale, so a bought account is never quite as safe as one you made yourself. Escrow protects you from a seller who never delivers; it cannot protect you from EA. Keep that in mind, and walk away from any listing that comes bundled with coin generators or other third-party tools.

So which one?

If Ultimate Team is your main mode, move to FC 27: the season, the market and most of your opponents are there. If you mostly play Career, Kick-Off and the odd Rush session, FC 26 already gives you all of it for a fraction of the price.
